Understanding the Difference Between Shopify 1.0 and 2.0

When Shopify released Online Store 2.0 in June 2021, it introduced a range of improvements that changed how store owners can manage and customise their sites. If you're still on 1.0 or not sure which version you're using, here's a simple breakdown of the key differences and what to consider if you're thinking about upgrading.

What’s difference between Shopify 1.0 and 2.0

  • Speed and performance
Shopify 2.0 is designed to be faster and more efficient. It can handle more traffic and larger volumes of transactions without affecting how smoothly your site runs.
  • Design flexibility
Shopify 1.0 had limited options for layout and customisation. With 2.0, you can create custom page templates and make changes to different sections without needing to edit the code. It gives you more freedom to shape your store the way you want.
  • Built-in marketing tools
2.0 comes with more advanced tools to support your marketing efforts. You’ll find better integrations for email, social media, and tracking, making it easier to reach and convert your audience.
  • Mobile experience
The mobile experience is stronger with 2.0. Since many customers browse and shop from their phones, having a store that’s designed with mobile users in mind helps improve sales and usability.
  • App integrations
Shopify 2.0 supports a wider range of apps and allows for smoother feature updates. You can add more functionality to your store with less technical hassle.

How to check your version

  1. Go to Online Store and click on Themes
  2. Select the theme you’re using and click Customise
  3. Choose Products, then Default product
  4. In the sidebar, scroll down and look for an Add section button
  5. If it appears, your theme is built on Shopify 2.0
  6. If not, you’re likely using an older theme

One thing to note

Just because a theme has a high version number doesn't always mean it's using the 2.0 framework. If you're unsure, speak to your designer or developer to confirm.

What about cost

Upgrading to a 2.0 theme is free if your current theme is compatible. However, if you want a tailored look or specific functionality, there may be extra design or development costs involved.

Why it matters

If you're building a brand that’s meant to grow, Shopify 2.0 gives you more control, better performance, and access to tools that make running your store easier. It’s a solid move for anyone thinking about long-term growth and a better customer experience.
